WOODS IN PROGRESS

botanical name unknown

This section is where I put woods that I am in the process of identifying.
Eventually they will move to a specific page when I identify them
or to the mystery wood page if I cannot.

my samples:
NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K)
colors will vary under other lighting conditions

numbers 2 through 12 are from a set of rosewoods harvested in Madagascar by a French gentleman, Franck C., who sent me these samples in the hopes that I could identify them. I am working on this in association with David Clark who is writing a book on rosewoods and a research scientist working with David on that effort.

It is not a given that they are all different woods.

I have not yet done the end grain fine sanding on these, nor done any analysis, so any comments I have added are very preliminary

SAMPLE 2

sample 2, both sides. HUGE enlargements are present.

NOTE: These pics are all deliberately overexposed
This means the colors are brighter than reality but the grain detail is more visible
HUGE enlargements are present for all

SAMPLE 3

sample 3, both sides --- if someone had just handed me this I would have said unhesitatingly that it is Honduran rosewood but a close look at the end grain makes me think it may not be because the pore density seems to be too large. I'll know more when I get the fine sanding done on the end grain.

I found the above unsatisfactory so took another pic and WAY overexposed it. I've never done this before but it turns out to be an EXCELLENT technique. MUCH better showing of the fine anatomy characteristics but keep in mind that if you look at wood of this species with a loupe you'll need one hell of a bright light to see things this clearly.
