Dalbergia spp. of the family Fabaceae (syn. Leguminosae) the legume, pea, or bean family, including primarily Dalbergia spruceana, but also possibly Dalbergia paraensis
my samples: NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K) colors will vary under other lighting conditions
both sides of a sample plank of Amazon rosewood / Dalbergia spruceana --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by Mark Peet whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site.
end grain and end grain closeup of the piece directly above
END GRAIN UPDATE from directly above. This shot was deliberately overexposed so that the end grain characteristics can be seen clearly.
both sides of a sample plank of Amazon rosewood / Dalbergia spruceana --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by David Clark whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. The labeled side is raw and pretty rough but the 2nd side has been sanded to 240 grit
end grain and end grain closeup of the piece directly above
both sides of a plank and a closeup --- the pics that these were cropped from all these appear to have been taken in the same light, so I have no explanation for the color change from one side to the other (but I DON'T believe it's the wood itself that changes color like that). To me this plank looks like tulipwood, not Amazon rosewood.
