RAMIN

Gonystylus spp.

Gonystylus spp. of the family Thymelaeaceae, including at least Gonystylus affinis, Gonystylus bancanus, Gonystylus brunnescens, Gonystylus confusus, Gonystylus forbesii, Gonystylus macrophyllus, Gonystylus maingayi, and Gonystylus velutinus, and possibly more.

This is one of those wood names that have numerous species (see directly above) all sold under the same common name and for this one, I would guess that many of the species are quite different, thus the fact that the colors here are all over the place.

my samples:

both sides of a sample plank of ramin / Gonystylus bancanus --- HUGE enlargements are present. This sample was loaned to me by Mark Peet whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site.

both sides of a sample plank of ramin (with blue stain) / Gonystylus spp. --- HUGE enlargements are present. The blue stain is quite mild on the surface but is very clear in the end grain closeup
