Although primarily Pterocarpus cambodianus of the family Fabaceae (syn. Leguminosae) the legume, pea, or bean family, a few other species in the genus Pterocarpus are sometimes sold as maidou; these include Pterocarpus dalbergiodes, Pterocarpus indicus (narra), Pterocarpus pedatus, and Pterocarpus macrocarpus, some of which are also sold as padauk.
Closly related to amboyna (narra) burl and looks very similar, so similar in fact that I think that some of what is shown below is actually amboyna, although I could be wrong about that. Also called Vietnam padauk and thnong.
my samples: NOTE: these pics were all taken in very bright incandescent lighting ("soft white" at 2700K) colors will vary under other lighting conditions
plank listed as maidou / Pterocarpus pedatus and bearing an obvious resemblance to red narra, to which it is closely related
both sides and a closeup of a burl
burls cut into bookmatched pairs
listed as a burl but looks more like a crotch
pen turned from a burl of maidou / Pterocarpus pedatus. Photograph contributed to the site by the pen turner, Bruce Selyem, whom I thank for this and other contributions to the site. The pen is finished with shellwax.
