WORLD WIDE CYPRESS NAMES

NOTE: many of the species discussed here have as many, or even more, common names using "cedar" as they do using "cypress". On this site, however, I have kept them all on the cypress pages and so list only the "cypress" names in this discussion. The cedar and cypress common names are quite a mess.

This list is extracted from a wood-name list of some 26,000 species and 140,000 common names that I have accumulated over the years.

Cypress is a type of wood that has gone through more revisions of botanical classifications than most woods and there are a large number of genera that use the name, all of which are now (but were not all in the past) included in the family Cupressaceae (the cypress family). With most of these wood name data sets, I limit species and names to those of North America but for cypress, I have only limited the names, not the species represented.

Some notes/caveats about the species listed here and the common names associated with them.
