There are more grinds for bowl gouges than there are manufacturers, but the image below gives a very good idea of the basic shapes.
- (1) V bowl gouge --- cannel is deep and has a V shape; gouge has a fingernail grind
- (2) U bowl gouge --- cannel is deep and has U shape; gouge has a fingernail grind
- (3) spindle gouge --- cannel is shallow and has a U shape
- (4) detail gouge --- cannel is very shallow with a U shape
- (5) shallow detail gouge --- cannel with such a shallow U shape that it almost isn't there
My general policy in this glossary is to consider the images I lift from various sites to be "fair use" in that they are small amounts and intended for educational use, so somewhat exempt from the normal rules of copyright.
