There are more grinds for bowl gouges than there are manufacturers, but the image below gives a very good idea of the basic shapes.

• (1) V bowl gouge --- cannel is deep and has a V shape; gouge has a fingernail grind
• (2) U bowl gouge --- cannel is deep and has U shape; gouge has a fingernail grind
• (3) spindle gouge --- cannel is shallow and has a U shape
• (4) detail gouge --- cannel is very shallow with a U shape
• (5) shallow detail gouge --- cannel with such a shallow U shape that it almost isn't there
