Each of these sets of 3 pics and then 3 more pics show mystery wood #220 at the top and below it a sample of the stated wood. Below each set of 6 pics is a horizontal line and then another stated wood. (the woods are cocobolo, Brazilian rosewood, camatillo, and Madagascar rosewood)

Each set of 3 consists of a 12X pic taken with my camera and shown here at 12X (depending on the resolution of your monitor) and then microscope pics of 70X and 300X, shown here greatly reduced to match the physical size of the 12X pic. The 70X pic is a section 1 centimeter wide and the 300X is a section .224 centimeters wide. The web page itself is a bit wide so you may have to go full screen to see each set of 3 spread across the page.

In each case the sample of the stated wood is the best match to mystery wood #220 that I could find for that particular wood. Others of each stated wood were typically even worse matches than the sample shown. All other rosewoods out of the 30 or so species that I have samples of could be ruled out easily by their end grain.

SO ... it could conceivably be any of these woods but I can't say anything conclusive.

Based on the side grain back on the main mystery wood page, it looks to me exactly like a piece of Brazilian rosewood that I have seen but the end grain is not a good enough match to say that it IS Brazilian rosewood and the other woods shown are not quite far enough off to say for sure that it is not one of them.
