NOTE: unless otherwise specifically stated, all of the images shown on this
page are of 1/4" square end grain cross sections shown at 12X with the top
of the image towards the bark and the bottom towards the pith so that
earlywood is towards the bottom of the growth rings and latewood is towards the top

general characteristics of hackberry end grain (very similar to elm)
pores: clear strong line of earlywood pores, one to several pores thick but usually no more than 2, dropping off to much smaller pores in wavy bands ("Ulmiform bands") throughout the latewood
parenchyma: heavy vasicentric parenchyma that looks confluent (because of the wavy bands) but isn't
rays: present and can usually be seen with a 10X loupe but often don't stand out strongly
growth rings: classic ring porous, obvious to the naked eye

NOTE: netleaf hackberry is technically Celtis laevigata var reticulata but it is often listed by woodworkers as Celtis reticulata even though, if one is going to omit the fact that it is a variety, it should be Celtis laevigata, not Celtis reticulata
netleaf hackberry / Celtis laevigata var reticulata --- a particularly slow-growth piece with about 35 growth rings per inch vs 5 to 8 per inch for the other hackberrys shown here
